An

e-Challan is a digital traffic fine notice issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) or state traffic police to violators of the Motor Vehicles Act. It replaces traditional paper receipts with a transparent, automated system that records violations through CCTV, speed guns, or handheld devices used by traffic officers.

Key Features & Process

  • Automated Detection: High-definition cameras (ITMS) capture violations like overspeeding, red-light jumping, and triple riding.
  • Instant Notification: Once a violation is verified against the VAHAN database, the vehicle owner receives an SMS with details on the offence, location, and fine amount.
  • Verification: You can check the status of any fine using your vehicle number, DL number, or challan number on the Parivahan e-Challan Portal.
  • Payment Window: Fines are generally payable within 60 days of issuance. 

Payment Methods

  1. Online: Visit the official e-Challan portal or your state’s traffic police website (e.g., Delhi Traffic Police). Select "Pay Online" and complete the transaction via UPI, Net Banking, or Credit/Debit card.
  2. Mobile Apps: Use the mParivahan app or authorized third-party platforms like CARS24 or Spinny.
  3. Offline: Pay in cash at your local Regional Transport Office (RTO) or the nearest traffic police station.
